
Aiming to strengthen its market in the middleweight bike segment, Royal Enfield has introduced two new motorcycles – Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 and Royal Enfield Interceptor 650. The base version of the Continental GT 650 has been priced at Rs 2.65 lakh, while its Custom and Chrome models cost Rs 2.72 lakh and Rs 2.85 lakh. The Interceptor 650, on the other hand, is made available in the price range of Rs 2.50 lakh – Rs 2.70 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom. Both the motorcycles made their global debut at the EICMA show in Milan early November, 2017.
RE’s 650 twins are global products with high speed cruising capabilities. Interestingly, design and styling bits of the all-new Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 and Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 have been derived from RE’s 50-60s motorcycles. Both the models also marked debut of the Royal Enfield’s all-new 650cc parallel-twin engine that was showcased at the UK Technology Centre near Leicester. The RE Continental GT 650 and Interceptor 650 are the most powerful bikes from the Chennai-based bikemaker in India.

The local manufacturing has surely helped the bikemaker to achieve aggressive pricing. As mentioned above, the entry-level variant of the Continental GT 650 comes with a price tag of Rs 2.65 lakh. While the Custom version is priced at Rs 2.72 lakh, the Chrome variant is made available at Rs 2.85 lakh (all, ex-showroom). States like Karnataka and Kerala that have higher levies and taxes, the standard version of the bike costs Rs 2.49 lakh and Rs 2.48 lakh respectively. Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 Design
Built on all-new twin cradle chassis, RE’s new middleweight bike shares a strong resemblance with other bikes from the Continental GT series that carry cafe racer styling. The architecture used for the bike has been designed and developed by Harris Performance, which is renowned for manufacturing racing motorcycle chassis and components. Interestingly, this bike follows design philosophy from 1960s cafe racing culture.
Styling bits such a sculpted fuel tank, retro-styled twin-pod instrument console and clip-on handlebars enhance its cafe-racer styling. The bike also gets rear set footrests and upswept exhausts. The Continental GT 650 rides on 18-inch spoke wheels and 100-section front and 130-section rear tyres. The overall length, width and height of RE’s new middleweight motorcycle stand at 2,122mm, 744mm and 1,024mm respectively. The bike offers a seat height of 790mm (single seat)/793 ((dual seat), and stands tall on a ground clearance of 174mm. Its tank fuel capacity stands at 12.5-litres. Powering RE’s new middleweight bike is an all-new parallel-twin, 648cc, oil-cooled, SOHC 4-valve fuel injected engine. This motor consists of a small radiator positioned at front of the engine on the double cradle chassis. The new 650cc unit is capable to deliver a maximum power of 47bhp at 7,250rpm, while pushing out a peak torque of 52Nm at 5,250rpm. Transmission duties on the bike are performed by an all-new 6-speed gearbox with slip assist clutch. The bike is claimed to have a thrilling exhaust note, but that can only be confirmed after seeing that in the flesh. This engine is A2 license compliant in UK.

As mentioned in the beginning, the Continental GT 650 is the most powerful bike from the Chennai bikemaker in the country. With hefty body-build and a powerful engine, this middleweight motorcycle is expected to be slightly less fuel efficient. This cafe racer will return a mileage around 15-20kmpl. Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 Suspension & Braking System
Designed on the tubular steel double cradle frame, the motorcycle comes equipped with 41mm telescopic front fork and a pair of twin gas-charged shock absorbers for performing damping duties. The front and rear suspension units have 110mm travel and 88mm travel respectively. For braking purposes, the bike gets 320mm and 240mm disc brakes at the front and rear axles.
