Maruti Suzuki is preparing to launch two brand new UVs – the Fronx crossover and the Jimny 5-door lifestyle SUV in the country in the first half of 2023. Both SUVs alongside the new EVX electric SUV concept were showcased at the recently concluded Auto Expo 2023. The production version of the electric SUV, codenamed YY8 is scheduled to be launched in 2024-25.

Maruti Suzuki is also working on an all-new 3-row SUV, internally codenamed Y17. The Maruti Y17 3-row SUV will rival the likes of the Mahindra XUV700 and the Tata Safari. The new SUV will be based on the Suzuki’s Global-C platform that underpins the newly launched Grand Vitara and the Toyota Hyryder. It will also be exported to select international markets.

If reports are to be believed, the new Maruti Y17 SUV will be produced at the brand’s new platform in Kharkhoda, Haryana. This new plant will be operational by 2025 and the 7-seater SUV will be the first model to be rolled out from this manufacturing unit. This plant will have a production capacity of 2.5 lakh per annum.

The new SUV will have a longer wheelbase compared to the Grand Vitara. The longer wheelbase and increased length will help Maruti Suzuki to accommodate third-row. The new model will receive some design changes, which will differentiate it from the 2-row Grand Vitara. It is likely to be offered with two engine options – a 1.5-litre NA petrol and a Toyota-sourced 1.5L 3-cylinder TNGA petrol with a strong hybrid tech. MSIL could source the 2.0L NA petrol engine & a 2.0L strong hybrid tech from Toyota. These engines currently power the new Innova Hycross.

Maruti 3-row SUV Launch Timeline

The new 3-row SUV will be positioned against the likes of the Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari and the MG Hector Plus. It will be produced at the brand’s new Haryana based plant and will be launched sometime in 2025.
