Maruti Suzuki is all set to launch the new Brezza in the country on June 30, 2022. The company will drop the “Vitara” prefix from the name, and the new model will be called the new Maruti Brezza. It is expected that the company’s upcoming mid-sized SUV, codenamed YFG will be called the Maruti Suzuki Vitara. The new Maruti Vitara will be positioned against the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, MG Astor, VW Taigun and the Skoda Kushaq.
Maruti Vitara – Engine Details
The new Maruti Vitara mid-sized SUV is jointly developed by Maruti Suzuki and Toyota joint venture. Before Vitara, Toyota will introduce the new mid-sized SUV, codenamed D22. It is reportedly to be called the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which will make global debut on July 1, 2022.
The new Maruti Vitara will be based on Toyota’s heavily localised TNGA-B platform or DNGA. Not just platform, the Maruti’s mid-sized SUV will share the components and features with the Toyota Hyryder. The new SUV will be produced at Toyota’s Bidadi based plant 2 in Karnataka. The new Hyryder and the Vitara will come with segment-first AWD (all-wheel drive) system. As a reminder, the Renault Duster was the first SUV in the category to offer AWD system. It was introduced in 2014 and was discontinued in 2022.
The new Maruti Vitara will be offered with two engine options – a 1.5-litre petrol with mild hybrid and a 1.5-litre petrol with strong hybrid system. The AWD system will be reserved for the mild hybrid powertrain. The strong hybrid setup will come with the self-charging and FWD (front-wheel drive) system. The entire setup will ensure better fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions.
The mild hybrid system is reportedly to offer a peak power of 103PS, while the strong hybrid unit will be good for 116PS. The Vitara’s mild hybrid setup will come with two gearbox options – a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic. The strong hybrid will come with the e-CVT gearbox.
The new Maruti Vitara mid-sized SUV will be sold through NEXA premium dealership network. It is likely to replace the ageing S-Cross crossover. The new model has already been spotted testing multiple times around Maruti Suzuki’s Haryana based facility. The spy images show that the new YFG SUV shares styling cues with the global Toyota Corolla Cross. The front styling will have design similarities with the Suzuki A-Cross that’s the re-badged Toyota RAV4 in the European markets.
The SUV gets the Suzuki’s signature grille and split headlamp set-up with A-Cross inspired LED DRLs positioned on top. It gets an aggressive lower bumper that accommodates a wider air-dam and fog lamp housing. Other design highlights will include multi-spoke alloy wheels, sleek ORVMs with integrated blinkers and sloping roofline. The SUV gets squared-off wheel arches and is likely to have a ground clearance of 200mm. The design of the new Maruti YFG will look different from the Toyota’s Hyryder.
The upcoming Maruti Vitara is likely to share interior features with the new Baleno. It will have a large floating touchscreen infotainment system with wireless connectivity, a Heads-Up Display or HUD, a digital instrument console, a 360 degree camera, connected car tech, ventilated front seats, automatic AC with rear AC vents, etc. The SUV is likely to offer 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control, Hill launch assist and others. Media reports suggest that the new SUV could also get ADAS features.
