Maruti Suzuki has finally started testing the 5-door version of the Jimny SUV on the Indian roads. This also confirmed that the Maruti Jimny 5 door will be launched in our market. The made-in-India lifestyle SUV will make India debut at the upcoming Auto Expo 2023 in January. Foreign media reports claim that the LWB version could make global debut before the end of this year.
MSIL is already developing the Jimny 3-door in India for export markets. The recent sightings of the Maruti Jimny 5 door has the typical Suzuki test registration plates, which we have already seen on other Maruti products. The spotted model was fully covered with thick cloth, which suggests that the SUV will receive significant design changes & upgraded cabin. The similar changes could be offered on the global-spec Suzuki Jimny 3-door.
It is reported that the new Maruti Jimny 5 door will be based on the Sierra and will have 300mm longer wheelbase. The lifestyle SUV is expected to measure 3,850mm in length, which is 300mm longer than the Sierra. The SUV will have a ground clearance of 210mm and is reportedly to have a kerb weight of 1,190kg that is 100kgs higher than the 3-door Sierra.
The new Jimny lifestyle SUV is expected to receive minimal changes. It is likely to get a bigger 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system instead of the 7-inch unit in the 3-door Jimny. The company could also add new seat upholstery and more modern features. Thanks to the longer wheelbase, the SUV will offer more space inside the cabin in the second row.
The Maruti Suzuki Jimny lifestyle SUV is likely to be powered by Maruti Suzuki’s 1.5-litre K15C, DualJet engine that also powers the new Grand Vitara and the Brezza. The three-door model is offered with a K15B engine. The new K15C petrol engine is capable of producing 102bhp and 137Nm of torque. Transmission choices could include the five-speed manual or the six-speed automatic. The vehicle will also receive Suzuki’s AllGrip all-wheel-drive setup with a manually operated transfer case.
The new Maruti Jimny 5 door is expected to be launched in the first half of 2023. It will be sold via Maruti Suzuki’s NEXA premium dealership network. It will rival the likes of the Mahindra Thar and the Force Gurkha, which will also receive 5-door versions.
